CURRENT EXHIBITION:
FRANK WRIGHT
Frank Wright's artwork has made him the man he is today as he will happily tell visitors to Walgett, where he was born and currently works and exhibits. Frank's artwork reflects local stories and his local cultural experience as a Gamileroi/ Yuwaalaraay man with a deep and respectful connection to country.
"Painting and drawing is something I have always enjoyed. I have extensive knowledge of the local animals and traditional stories from the land and country which inspires my paintings. Growing up on the Namoi Reserve on the banks of the Namoi River in Walgett, I have listened to stories from my grandparents and parents around the campfire, stories I have begun to incorporate into my painting. The Emu features prominently in my work, along with many of the other animals found in the area around Walgett, and the river systems of the Namoi and Barwon. I work closely with other artists in schools and with young people, I to see Walgett on the map as the home of quality Indigenous art in Western NSW."
Frank's energy and enthusiasm for art, and his award-winning artwork - notably his recent large-scale work on the Walgett water tower, easily bridges the critical space between creativity and commercial reality, all the while maintaining the link to the cultural stories of the region. Frank has a large portfolio of experience, from the Walgett water tower mural and Aboriginal Medical Centre, Gulargambone park panels, exhibiting in Moree’s Yaama Ganu Gallery, Armidale’s UNE Taragara Gallery and many galleries along the Central Coast of NSW. He has also exhibited overseas, in Port De Bouq, France and Mexico. Frank has worked with Moorambilla Voices since 2013 and his beautiful work has featured on multiple large-scale backdrops, t-shirts, concert programs and gift cards.
